The Total Screen's Weekly Newsletter 022 - September 27th, 2018

News

  • Over in the United Kingdom, BBC 2 is undergoing a re-branding.  Ignoring all of the boring details, the rebranding has promised yet unknown shows developed by Charlie Brooker (Black Mirror), and an adaptation of Eleanor Catton’s novel, The Luminaries, which will star Eva Green (Penny Dreadful), Eve Hewson (The Knick), and Marton Csokas (Into the Badlands).
  • The Hollywood Reporter's former Co-President Janice Min has announced her involvement in Jeffrey Katzenberg’s NewTV, a streaming video start-up.  Min has stated that her involvement means that their will be news content on the mobile-first streaming service.
  • AMC plans to milk The Walking Dead franchise for everything its got, as they are reportedly developing multiple spin-off shows and movies of the post-apocalyptic zombie series.
  • Fox has ordered Bless The Harts, an animated comedy from Emily Spivey, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller (The Last Man on Earth).  The series - which will feature the voices of Kristen Wiig (Ghostbusters), Maya Rudolph (The Good Place), Jillian Bell (22 Jump Street) and Ike Barinholtz (Blockers) - follows a group of broke southerners pursuing the American dream.
  • Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina) is set to star in Run, the next series from the in demand Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Killing Eve).  Run, a Romantic Comedy/Thriller has a pilot order at HBO.
  • 4 more have been cast in Apple's comedy Dickinson, about world renowned Poet Emily Dickinson (1830-1886).  Joining Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) and Jane Krakowski (30 Rock) are Toby Huss (Halt and Catch Fire), Anna Baryshnikov (Superior Donuts), Ella Hunt (Anna and the Apocalypse), and Adrian Blake Enscoe (We Don’t Belong Here).
  • LaMonica Garrett (Sons of Anarchy) has been cast in the upcoming Arrow-verse crossover as Mar Novu/The Monitor, an all powerful alien being.
  • Johnny Galecki (The Big Bang Theory) will reprise his role as Darlene's former spouse David in the Roseanne sequel series, The Conners.  In the recent Roseanne continuation we learned that David has a new girlfriend, who we now know will be portrayed by Juliette Lewis (Natural Born Killers).
  • Tom Wlaschiha (Game of Thrones) has been cast in season 2 of Amazon's Jack Ryan series.
  • Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet's daughter Zoe Kravitz (Mad Max: Fury Road) will portray a gender swapped version of John Cusack's character Rob in the TV adaptation of Nick Hornby's High Fidelity.  The series is one of the many high profile offerings in development for Disney's upcoming streaming service.
  • More Actors have signed on to reprise their Veronica Mars characters in Hulu's continuation series:  Jason Dohring who played Veronica's biggest love interest Logan Echolls, Percy Daggs III who played Veronica's best friend Wallace, Francis Capra who took on the role of Weevil, a thug with a heart of gold, and David Starzyk who portrayed Richard Casablancas, father to Logan's crass friend Dick Casablancas, and the deeply troubled Cassidy Casablancas.
  • Former NBA Mega-Star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who will have a guest appearance on the upcoming season of iZombie, is signing up to work with iZombie Showrunner Rob Thomas on the Veronica Mars continuation series at Hulu.  Rather than acting, in Veronica Mars, the Basketball legend will be joining the writers room.
  • Apple's new TV service isn't looking great.  The phone maker has shelved Vital Signs, a completed series from Dr Dre and Jimmy Iovine that featured Actors Ian McShane (American Gods) and Sam Rockwell (Moon).  Apple has apparently put its foot down over depictions of sex, violence, and religious iconography.  Other affected shows include Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston's Untitled Morning Show Project, and M. Night Shyamalan's yet untitled series.  The Wall Street Journal has reported that  Apple's own employees have taken to calling their upcoming streaming service "Expensive NBC", a disparaging remark base don the bland reputation of the peacock network.
  • HBO is turning their massive Game of Thrones sets into a tourist attraction in Northern Ireland.  Along with set visits and studio tours, visitors will also be able to check out a large number of props and costumes from the series.
  • Harlots has been renewed for a 3rd season at Hulu.
