News

  • Jeff Katzenberg and Meg Whitman have raised over a a billion dollars for their upcoming streaming service.  Investors range from big media companies like Disney, to Amazon's massive Asia based competitor Alibaba.  The service is currently going by the seemingly temporary name, NewTV.  NewTV is promising expensive, but short, content, essentially 15 minute episodes with budgets over a million per.
  • Disney's upcoming Star Wars series, for their own also upcoming streaming service, is said to have a budget of around $10 million/episode, which is about equal to the last season of HBO's Game of Thrones.  The series will be run by Jon Favreau (Iron Man).
  • Fox executives Dana Walden and Gary Newman say that New Fox, post Disney buyout of 20th Century Fox, will focus on shows from outside partners like Warner Bros and Sony.  Fox will negotiate to co-own these properties.
  • Hillary Clinton is stepping into TV production by partnering with Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment on an adaptation of the Elaine Weiss book The Woman’s Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote.   
  • Another "impossible" adaptation is in the works as Epix plans to bring Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five to the small screenThe series will be produced by Patrick Macmanus (Marco Polo) and Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead), with Kari Skogland (The Handmaid’s Tale) on board as a Director.
  • Duncan Jones (Moon) to direct for Tony Kent's adaptation of his own novel, Killer Intent.  
  • Steven Moffat's (Doctor Who) next project, after showrunning the most famous time travel series for 4 seasons, will be to adapt Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler’s Wife for HBO.
  • MGM is planning to bring back American Gladiators, this time with Preacher Producer Seth Rogen attached.
  • Patrick Stewart is set to reprise his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in a new Star Trek series for CBS All Access.  Stewart says Picard, no longer a Captain, has been changed by the years, but that the heart of love of The Next Generation will be throughout the new series.
  • Michael Tolkin is planning a television adaptation of his book The Return of the Player, the sequel to his book The Player, which was adapted to a now classic film in 1992.
  • Apple has secured rights for a TV series adaptation of Min Jin Lee's PachinkoSoo Hugh (The Terror) will serve as Showrunner on the series which will reportedly have a budget which is equivalent to Netflix's mega budget drama The Crown.
  • The Plain White T's song Hey There Delilah is being adapted for television by Lively McCabe Entertainment and Primary Wave as a romantic dramedy about a long distance relationship.
  • Warner Bros is working on a reboot of the 1980s classic sitcom Alf, about a small furry alien life form with a taste for cats and a friendship with an American family.
  • FX has ordered their silicon valley drama pilot Devs to seriesSonoya Mizuno (Ex Machina) has taken the lead role, with Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) attached as well.  The series is being run by Alex Garland (Ex Machina).
  • FX has ordered a remake of the classic Shogun mini series, a new adaptation of James Clavell's famed novel of the same name.  The series is being written by Eugene Kelly (Westworld) and Ronan Bennett (Public Enemies) with Tim Van Patten (Game of Thrones) attached to direct multiple episodes.  FX promises that the many Japanese roles will not be "whitewashed".
  • Hulu has ordered Shrill to series.  The Aidy Bryant (Saturday Night Live) starer, focuses on an overweight woman who wants to change her life, but not her body.
  • Subjects to be covered by the second season of Netflix's Mindhunter include: Wayne Williams (the subject of the Atlanta Monster podcast), David Berkowitz (The Son of Sam), and the long rumored Charles Manson.  The vignettes, from season 1, about the BTK killer are also expected to continue.
  • Timothy Hutton (Leverage) has joined the cast of FX's adaptation of Y: The Last Man as the President of the United States
  • David Schwimmer (Friends) has joined the cast of Will & Grace as a love interest for Grace.
  • Joseph Quinn (Howard's End) has joined the cast of Catherine The Great as Catherine's heir Prince Paul.
  • American Horror Story Alums Jessica Lange, Lily Rabe, Gabourey Sidibe, Taissa Farmiga, Frances Conroy, and Singer Stevie Nicks have all joined the cast of American Horror Story's 8th season, Apocalypse.
  • Billy Porter (Pose) has also joined the cast of American Horror Story: Apocalypse.
  • Abigail Spencer (Timeless) has landed the lead role in Hulu's Reprisal.
  • Ruby Rose (Orange is the New Black) has been cast as Bat Woman in this season's CW Arrow-verse cross-over.  A Bat Woman series is also in development.
  • Monica Bellucci (The Matrix Reloaded) has been cast as Tina Modotti, the famed Feminist, in the miniseries Radical Eye: The Life and Times of Tina Modotti.
  • Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) to portray Actress and Inventor Hedy Lamarr in a Showtime limited series from Sarah Treem (The Affair)
  • Wilson Bethel (Hart of Dixie) to play Bullseye in Daredevil season 3.
  • Linda Cardellini (Freaks and Geeks) has joined the cast of Dead to Me as Judy the best friend of series lead Christina Applegate's (Married with Children) Jen.
  • Skyler Astin (Pitch Perfect) will be taking over Santino Fontana's (Frozen) role as Greg, when the character returns after a long absence, in the final season of Crazy Ex Girlfriend.
  • Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: The Next Generation) has revealed some of the cast for his upcoming episode of The Orville.  The episode will include Star Trek Alumni F. Murray Abraham (Star Gate: SG1), Ron Canada (Ted 2), Tony Todd (Candyman), and Actor Ted Danson (The Good Place).
  • Fargo season 4 to star Comedian Chris Rock (Everybody Hates Chris), take place in Kansas City, Missouri in the 1950s.
  • Steven R. McQueen to reprise his role as Jeremy from The Vampire Diaries in the 2nd spin-off series, Legacies.
  • Kaitlin Olson (The Mick) starring opposite Leah Remini (King of Queens) in the yet untitled comedy from  Rob McElhenney and Rob Rosell (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia).
  • Niecy Nash (Claws) and Kylie Bunbury (Pitch) have joined the cast of Netflix's Central Park Five.
  • Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy) to join the cast of the 5th season of Amazon's Bosch as Hector Bonner an Investigator for, and former client of, Honey Chandler.
  • Brent Spiner (Star Trek: The Next Generation) will take on the role of the Vice President of the United States of America in season 4 of Supergirl.
  • Cate Blanchett (The Lord of the Rings) joining the cast of IFC's Documentary parody series Documentary Now!
  • Transgender Actress Trace Lysette (Transparent) to portray a Witch in Midnight, Texas.
  • Donald Faison (Scrubs) and Eric Nelson (A Walk Among the Tombstones) have joined the cast of USA's Erase.
  • Austin Abrams (The Americans) nabs the lead role in Hulu's adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ Less Than Zero.
  • Spike Actor James Marsters says that he would be up to reprising his role in the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series.
  • Bash Doran (Bruiser) to serve as Showrunner on HBO's Demimonde, the mysterious project from JJ Abrams (LOST).
  • Black-ish co-showrunner Kenny Smith has signed a 3-year deal at ABCBlack-ish Creator Kenya Barris close to closing deal with Netflix.
  • Renewals: Hints are abound that point towards a 5th season of Sherlock. The CW says they don't have plans to end any of their Arrow-verse shows. American Horror Story has been renewed through season 10 ahead of its season 8 premiere.  The twice cancelled Timeless is getting a 2 episode finale to give fans closure.  Season 9 of Shameless has been expanded to 14 episodes.  
  • Cancelled: The Dangerous Book for Boys cancelled by Amazon.  The Chris Gethard Show cancelled by truTV.  FX is not moving forward with their Charles and Diane season of Feud.  Homeland is ending with season 8.  After NBC let the rights to renew Trial & Error lapse, Warner Bros TV is shopping the show elsewhere.
