On January 24th, 2020, The Total Screen began a LOST rewatch in honor of the 10 year anniversary of the series finale. We began watching 1 episode a day, everyday, so that we would conclude on may 23rd, exactly 10 years after the series aired its final episode. We will be discussing each season, as we pass them, on our Weekly podcast, The Weekly Set. As I began the pilot episode of the series, I had a random though that I put out to the world through Twitter. As I watched each additional episode I continued this action as a sort of ritual to my rewatch. At a certain point I realized that I should compile these tweets, along with expanded thoughts, into a frequently updated article that would chronicle my journey, rewatching my all time favorite television series. This is that article.
SEASON 1
January 24th, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 1 - Pilot (Part 1)
Original Air Date - September 22nd, 2004
Started my #LOST #rewatch tonight... First thing that came to mind "Where the hell is Matthew Fox these days?"— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) January 25, 2020
Turns out he hasn't done anything in 5 years
You need to go back, Jack, you need to go act!
While watching the first episode of the series again, for the first time in many years, it suddenly hit me that I hadn't seen the series lead, Matthew Fox, in quite a long time. After looking it up on IMDB, I found that his last recorded role wa sin the 2015 movie Bone Tomahawk. It would be great to see Fox in a new show, or perhaps in a major film franchise, like the MCU.
The tweet says it all, establishing characters as tropes, and then upending those tropes as they are further revealed and developed, so should be character building 101 for an ensemble story.
January 25th, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 2 - Pilot (Part 2)
Original Air Date - September 29th, 2004
Day 2 of #LOST #rewatch . All of these characters began as easily understandable tropes and cliches, which was used as a short hand in order to jump us into a big story with a ton of characters, most, if not all, of which were masterfully deconstructed and developed.— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) January 26, 2020
The tweet says it all, establishing characters as tropes, and then upending those tropes as they are further revealed and developed, so should be character building 101 for an ensemble story.
January 26th, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 3 - Tabula Rasa
Original Air Date - October 6th, 2004
Night 3 of the #LOST #rewatch . Kate episodes tend to be the worst episodes, but I remember watching with a friend, and everytime this shot came up he would say "I'm going to f' you in the ass... You!", and it just fit. pic.twitter.com/3uEwLOxvFj— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) January 27, 2020
My friend Matt and I used to routinely binge shows together, usually me catching him up on the latest and greatest on TV. The 2 of us are also very ADhD, and will joke around as we watch, with a running commentary about the shows. Recently, we were binging Watchmen, and began adding in Trent Reznor styled, sometimes melancholic/sometimes angry, vocals to the music, explaining what was happening in each scene... "He's microwaving babies now!"
January 27th, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 4 - Walkabout
Original Air Date - October 13th, 2004
Night 4 of #LOST #rewatch . I remember #Walkabout, this episode, as the best episode of the first 3 seasons of the show, eventually bested by the season 4 episode, #TheConstant. So far, it is living up to the memory. "Colonel Locke, is this line secure?"— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) January 28, 2020
Who wasn't blown away by this episodes big reveal. Both a huge moment for the island's mythos, and a great reveal to help us understand Locke's character and motivation. Nobody tell John Locke what he can't do.
January 28th, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 5 - White Rabbit
Original Air Date - October 20th, 2004
— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) January 29, 2020
No offense meant to Ian Somerhalder. The V-Wars Actor had a memorable run in the series as Boone. That being said, at leats in this episode, he was completely useless.
January 29th, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 6 - House of the Rising Sun
Original Air Date - October 27th, 2004
Missing Tweet
Well, Looks like I missed a day. As for the episode itself, Sun and Jin's relationship was always interesting. So much genuine love, turned into so much tension and toxicity. Jin begins the series as such an unlikable figure, but over time, not only does Sun forgive him, but his motivations are exposed in a way that changes our perception of his actions.
January 30th, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 7 - The Moth
Original Air Date - November 3rd, 2004
Night 7 of #LOST #rewatch , the first Charlie episode, thank you @DomsWildThings for breathing life into this very flawed but fascinating character. #YouAllEverybody— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) January 31, 2020
Dominic Monaghan was one of the biggest reasons I checked out LOST He had just come off an excellent run as Merry in the Lord of the Rings movies, and as such, was royalty to fantasy nerds, like myself. With that understood, his performance as Charlie in LOST, wiped Merry completely from my mind. Dominic WAS Charlie, in a way that Actors rarely are their respective characters.
January 31st, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 8 - Confidence Man
Original Air Date - November 10th, 2004
Night 8 of #LOST #rewatch , ahhh Sawyer. I remember catching a friend up on the show between seasons, and I told him he would come to like Sawyer. He vehemently denied he would. Some episodes later, he begrudgingly admitted he had. Same thing happened with #Thrones Jaime BTW.— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 1, 2020
Yep, talking about my binge buddy Matt again. When we were binging Game of Thrones he repeated his early stance on Sawyer, only applied to Jaime. Once again, he came to love the once detestable character. Jaime and Sawyer are actually quite alike, as handsome blondes with wicked tongues, that are dangerous, yet misunderstood.
February 1st, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 9 - Solitary
Original Air Date - November 17th, 2004
Night 9 of #LOST #rewatch . Lots of cool stuff in this episode already, first appearance of the French Woman, first appearance of Tom Cruise's cousin as Ethan, and of course, the beginning of Sayid's fascinating love story. #IslandOpen #YouDidntHearAboutThePolarBear— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 2, 2020
Got to love a Sayid episode of LOST. Action, love, and torture in both character actions and self inflicted emotions.
February 2nd, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 10 - Raised by Another
Original Air Date - December 1st, 2004
Night 10 of #LOST #rewatch had 2 great WTF moments... 1. The moment Charlie realizes the Psychic's plan, and 2. The moment Hurley reveals that Ethan wasn't on the plane, and Ethan's creepy stare. Oh, and then there is the first time Sawyer wasn't a dick.#HelloThere— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 3, 2020
Hurley got the best of Sawyer. Not Kate, Hurley. Jorge Garcia worms his way into the hearts of everyone on LOST. As Hurley, he charms characters and audiences alike.
February 3rd, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 11 - All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues
Original Air Date - December 8th, 2004
Night 11 of #LOST #rewatch , that Charlie death fake our was emotionally draining. The use of music, Kate crying as Jack is hammering on his chest going well past the point in which he should have given up. The character drama in this show is just immense.— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 4, 2020
I remember seeing Charlie hanging on my first viewing. I clearly rememebr the sadness when Jack stopped trying to save him. I remember sharing in Kate's despair, as Jack just couldn't give up, hammering on Charlie's chest, symbolizing his characters greatest weakness, an inability to let go. Then I remember the elation when Charlie gasped for air. Jack may be flawed in his inability to let go, on this night, it saved our beloved Charlie.
February 4th, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 12 - Whatever the Case May Be
Original Air Date - January 5th, 2005
Night 12 of #LOST #rewatch , as we continue to follow who are now the most well armed band of plane crash survivors... 5 guns, boxes of ammo, an axe, and an assortment of hunting knives... Next briefcase they find will have the US nuclear football.— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 5, 2020
Seriously, the cast of characters in LOST are packing.
February 5th, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 13 - Hearts and Minds
Original Air Date - January 12th, 2005
Night 13 of #LOST #rewatch ... Locke's desperation for purpose is warping him into an island worshipping zealot, it is the tragedy of his character.— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 6, 2020
The entirety of LOST is defined by opposing forces. The crash survivors versus the others, Jacob versus The Man in Black, a man of science versus a man of faith. In that last example, Locke is the man of faith for much of the series run. Unfortunately, he is so desperate for purpose that he is often manipulated. In Hearts and Minds we see the seams of this island prophet, and begin to realize that he is as titularly lost as everyone else.
February 6th, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 14 - Special
Original Air Date - February 19th, 2005
Night 14 of #LOST #rewatch ! This is, unfortunately, a story they weren't able to do much with... #PubertyIsABitch when it comes to producing a TV show with a compressed but loopy timeline.— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 7, 2020
Actor Malcolm David Kelley played Walt on LOST, starting when he was around 12 years old. The series, though running 6 seasons compressed the first 4 seaons of its story into a matter of months. Unfortunately, it is hard to make a 16 year old stay 12, nature has a say in these things, and she doesn't care about the plight of great television. As such, LOST's producers had to hide the character away, and in doing so, truncate their plans for his story.
February 7th, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 15 - Homecoming
Original Air Date - February 9th, 2005
Night 15 of #LOST #rewatch ... RIP Steve... Err Scott... Err... That guy with the cool crimson top.#RIPSam— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 8, 2020
Our first big red-shirt death comes just a few episodes after red-shirts were referenced in the show itself. For those not in the know, in the original Star Trek series, expendable characters became known as red-shirts by the fan-base due to their uniform color. The death of Steve/Scott presents this joke of the expendable background character, and then applies a little meta shame.

Night 16 of #LOST #rewatch . The opening scene of this episode had been cemented in my brain since I first saw it. What a fucked up thing to happen to young Sawyer.— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 9, 2020
Sawyer might have the deepest baggage of all of the survivors on the island. We learned his story back when he let Kate read his letter. Seeing it, though, is far more brutal than hearing about it. Big sympathy points for king jerk of the island.
February 9th 2020 - Season 1 Episode 17 - ... In Translation
Original Air Date - February 23rd, 2005
Night 17 of #LOST #rewatch . I love how this episode largely showed Jin's side of events in contrast to Sun's from their previous episode. Probably the second best love story of the series.— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 10, 2020
Sun's flashback only dog got an origin story. Vincent must be jealous.
February 10th, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 18 - Numbers
Original Air Date - March 2nd, 2005
Night 18 of #LOST #rewatch . The first Hurley episode, a great mix of humor, tragedy, and conspiracy. One if the best of the season #4815162342— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 11, 2020
The fun introduction of conspiracy theory madness and superstition to LOST was almost more of the beginning of an easter egg hunt for fans than it was a central plot to the series. Fans of the show found those numbers everywhere. I imagine that if those numbers ever won an actual lotto jackpot, by the time the sum was divided, many millions of fans would enjoy a single juicy hamburger.
February 11th, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 19 - Deus Ex Machina

Night 19 of #LOST #rewatch .— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 12, 2020
Poor Locke, always looking to belong, to have purpose, but always manipulated. Poor Boone, a victim of Locke's desperation.#TheresaFallsUpTheStairs #TheresaFallsDownTheStairs
With hindsight in play, we can see this now as a twisted manipulation by the nameless man in black.
February 12th, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 20 - Do No Harm
Original Air Date - April 6th, 2005
Night 20 of #Lost #rewatch . We are now seeing the parallels between Jack and Locke, a man of science and a man of faith, as Jack struggles to let go. LOST has always been about duality. We got an ep about life and death, and the beginnings of a story about science and faith.— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 13, 2020
I had to rework this tweet a bunch of times in order to fit the character limit imposed by Twitter. I, sadly didn't have space to add a direct reference to Jack using Locke's signature line, "don't tell me what I can't do!"
February 13th, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 21 - The Greater Good
Original Air Date - May 4th, 2005
Night 21 of #LOST #rewatch . Tonight's episode isn't spectacular, it is only connecting pieces of previous events, giving us closure to some, and getting ready to move us forward in the story. That being said, good character drama is still good character drama.— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 14, 2020
Transitional episodes are necessary, but there isn't much to say about them.
February 14th, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 22 - Born to Run
Original Air Date - May 11th, 2005
Night 22 of #LOST #rewatch .— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 15, 2020
Sun did it! Kate was exposed. Wait, Kate did it? Jack saw the hatch. Walt warned Locke about opening it. Basically a filler episode, linking some stories together and advancing them to prepare for the 3 part season finale.
Small stakes filler episodes are mostly an artifact of network TV's high episode counts clashing with serialized storytelling.
February 15th, 2020 - Season 1 Episode 23 - Exodus (Part 1)
Original Air Date - May 18th, 2005
Night 23 of #LOST #rewatch— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 16, 2020
Lots of big stuff. The great WTF reveal of the Black Rock, and the first appearance of Anna Lucia. Then we had 2 nasty moments of racism at the airport. The best of the episode, though, was the boat launch, a testament to the power of great music.
Those racist bits were uncomfortable, from the couole mocking Jin and Sun to Shannon asserting herself to her brother by reporting Sayid. On a side note, I feel that a modern take on LOST would have far more divisive politics at play among the islanders about what is right. Sadly, there would likely be more racist characters contributing to that.

Original Air Date - May 25th, 2005
Night 25 of #LOST #rewatch— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 18, 2020
I remember hosting a viewing party for this episode, the season 1 finale.
I remember that
1. We only had a little 32" tube SD TV
2. We noted our theories for what was in the hatch, and saved them for the season 2 premiere...
Nobody wrote Desmond.
I frequently host events for shows, LOST was the start of it, but I have also hosted viewing parties for Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. Some of those who attend these events are eager for the next show we host, but with the dominance of streaming without time slots, and full season dumps for serialized shows, it just isn't the same.
SEASON 2
February 18th, 2020 - Season 2 Episode 1 - Man of Science, Man of Faith
Original Air Date - September 21st, 2005
Night 26 of #LOST #rewatch— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 19, 2020
The opening scene of the season 2 premiere is an absolute classic, already paid homage to by others influential shows. What's in the hatch? Why Desmond Hume is, of course. #MakeYourOwnKindOfMusic#SingYourOwnSpecialSong#SeeYouInAnotherLifeBrotha
The famous scene of a man working out in the hatch, with we the viewers, confused over whose flashback it was, only to reveal it was inside the hatch on the island, in the present. This iconic scene will be paid homage to for decades. Two shows that already have include Westworld and The Good Place.
February 19th, 2020 - Season 2 Episode 2 - Adrift
Original Air Date - September 28th, 2005
Night 27 of #LOST #rewatch— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 20, 2020
I remember this episode, Adrift, as the worst in the series. Though watching it now, without expectations, I am not as bothered by half of the episode consisting of Micheal and Sawyer blaming each other.
The episode, I feel, is necessary, in order to show some actual passage of time. There is, however, no benefit in the present for those of us watching 2 characters endlessly bicker at each other.
February 20th, 2020 - Season 2 Episode 3 - Orientation

Night 28 of #LOST #rewatch— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 21, 2020
On tonight's episode we meet the love of Locke's life, Peggy Bundy.#RealHellenNotPhoneSexOperator
Locke centric episodes are always tragedies. Even though this episode's backstory doesn't end on such a dark note, we know that Hellen wasn't in Locke's life before he left for Australia. We also know, by the Operator he was calling Hellen on the phone in Walkabout, that Hellen's absence in his life is a deep wound for the character.
February 21st, 2020 - Season 2 Episode 4 - Everybody Hates Hugo
Original Air Date - October 12th, 2005
Night 29 of #LOST #rewatch— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 22, 2020
Hurley remains one if the most lovable characters in TV history. I remember the Actor, Jorge Garcia, saying that he wished his character could be a little dangerous. The show, however, really needs this character as he is, a genuinely kind soul.
That being said, he DID try and blow up the hatch with dynamite.
February 22nd, 2020 - Season 2 Episode 5 - ...And Found
Original Air Date - October 19th, 2005
Night 30 of #LOST #rewatch— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 23, 2020
LOST has a way of making very powerful small moments between characters. Sun had several in this episode, most notably when finding her ring. The tiny moment of relief overlaying her fear for Jin's safety (and that music) made the scene come alive.
Remember when we, the audience, concluded that Jin and Sun's relationship was toxic? This is one of the things I love most about the show, its ability to have us make a snap judgement about a situation, only to shatter our initial impression.

Night 31 of #LOST #rewatch— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 23, 2020
An entitled brat, then a mourning sister, then a caring companion to the fellow islanders, then the attentive caretaker to Walt's dog Vincent, then a tragic figure killed by the forces of the island (and a careless Ana Lucia).#RIPShannon#SayidMad

Night 32 of #LOST #rewatch— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 25, 2020
LOST had its very own version of a clip show, as they caught us up with the tailies.#SayidStillMad
It seems that the Tailies suffered more on the island than Jack, Kate, and the rest. Though I wonder how much of that is due to Ana Lucia's leadership in contrast to Jack's.

Night 33 of #LOST #rewatch— (((Tyson Gifford))) (@TysonGifford) February 26, 2020
Ana Lucia really is the worst, rash and impulsive, unnecessarily aggressive, and stubborn.
She will admit responsibility, but then continues to be reckless and dangerous.#NowSayidSad
The reasoning behind her rash behavior is expounded through the reveal at the end of this episode's flahsback. That being said, I would argue that the personality traits that compounded her tragedy into her behavior were, in fact, already dooming her party to bad leadership.

Some might find frustration in the little Easter Egg mysteries and oddities that fill LOST with, in some cases, inevitable disappointment. I, on the other hand, enjoyed every minute of the hunt. Food addiction is real, especially when you eat as a method of coping with anxiety, fear, or even anger. It is often tied to deeper problems, as many other addictions are.
As a fat guy myself, food is the vice I turn to when the world gets too real and heavy. I eat until I feel overstuffed, so as not to feel empty. Food addiction wasn't necessarily handled in the best way in this episode, Hurley's weight rarely is, but I do appreciate that it showed binge-eating as a symptom of anxiety for his character.

Missed another day it seems. This episode creates the divide between Eko and Locke, the 2 men of faith. Locke's faith is tested and he comes out doubting, while the very thing that bring Locke doubt cements Eko's faith in Locke's task.

Lost was obscenely good at connecting stories and showing multiple angles of past instances. In this episode we see what Micheal had been up to, and how he made contact with the others.
Other instance of this include a moment in the season finale that shows Locke at his weakest, rejuvenated by a light, which we see was turned on by Desmond who himself was at a weak moment before the encounter.

Desmond and Penny, the best love story on the show. Desmond episodes are always great, but the love story at the center of them drives so much more than his own episodes.

The very first mystery was answered in this season 2 finale. Why did Oceanic Flight 815 crash? The answer, like with the question about what was in the hatch, turned out to be Desmond.#TurnThatKeyBrotha
The moment in which Desmond realizes he crashed Oceanic flight 815 is one of the best answers to a question the series ever provides. Fitting that one of the best answers is to the very first question.

This show just loves to introduce new facets without us knowing what they are. Season 2 opened with Desmond as we wondered whose flashback we were seeing. Season 3 now opens the same way, but with Juliet.
You got us again LOST. The reveal that the Other's was an almost suburban community, was as shocking as finding out that the hatch was an entrance to an active 70s era bunker filled with supplies and amenities (and some Scottish dude).

"Maybe if he was hit by a bus"
*Que popular TV/Film trope*#IfItWasATruckHeWouldReincarnateInAFantasyWorld
in the 2000s, a character being struck (and sometimes killed) by a bus was a common trope from movies like Mean Girls, to shows like Skins, there are super-cuts out there for those curious. It isn't a trope we see very often these days, though there is a current genre of manga/light novels/anime dubbed "Isekai" that often begins with the protagonist being hit by a truck, and then reincarnated or transferred to another world. I like to imagine Edmund, in a fantasy realm, building a harem, and preparing to face the Demon Lord, all with the help of a "cheat" ability. Where's that spin-off.

Can we all agree that heel-turn Charlie was miserable to watch? How sweet was it to see Charlie and Hurley have some fun? All the more fun when they are joined by Sawyer, Jin, and Roger, cranking some tunes, drinking some beer, and doing a little offroading. Where were the Island Police?

John sure felt cocky about his win, while Hurley showed humility with his. John's win turned on him, Hurley's didn't. Sometimes there are lessons
Locke's heel-turn is more nuanced than Charlie's, though his motivations come down to his need to be special, and he makes many stupid decisions on his path, his desperation is so real, and there are always narratives to feed his delusions.

As much as I hated Nikki and Paolo, I actually like this episode, which played on the fans distaste for the characters being forcefully injected into their favorite show. Lots of cameos from deceased characters, and a send off that is both chilling and cathartic. The ending also comes back in season 4 or 5 with an interesting callback.

This is what makes Hurley such a great character. He is lovable, kind, and out for the benefit of others. He is the every man throwing in many of the "dude" lines we need to reflect upon the crazy things the show delivers. Most importantly, he holds all of those qualities, while not being stupid or useless to the camp. I believe that if Hurley was the camp leader, with a decent council of advisors, things would be much better for our castaways.

We received context to the seasons opening scene, then were re-shown it, using the same song, as a montage. This is a Lindelof signature, and a big part of what made the show so powerful.#ThingsWillBeGreatWhenYoureDowntown
This context into Juliet's mindset during the opening scene of the 3rd season is pure LOST goodness. It is the stuff that made the show so good. These moments of depth that are explored well after we see the symptoms that re-contextualize so much.

Three wins, two ties, no losses. Those are the stats in race between Barry Allen and Clark Kent. But back to the episode... Desmond tried to be cold, in order to make a future he wanted happen, but he just can't help himself. He may be a coward when it comes to taking steps to better his life, but that is a side effect of devaluing his own self worth. When it comes to helping others, he has never been a coward.

This show is so good at taking bad news and making it bittersweet. The baby was conceived on the island, a virtual death sentence for Sun. Sun broke into tears, of happiness, in knowing that the baby was Jin's.
There is so much power in watching Sun break down in tears, of what turns out to be joy, at the news of her baby's father. All of the bad news is hitting her too, but this episode is about shame, and a big piece of that has finally been taken from her shoulders. The relief she feels is palpable.

I found the scene between Locke and James (Sawyer) , immediately after Locke's father died, to be powerful. They're was a lot of emotion conveyed with the eyes alone.#ThankYou
This second half of season 3 is just loaded with these incredibly powerful moments between 2 characters sharing an, often unspoken, moment with the audience. The effect of the preceding act will weigh heavily on Sawyer, and act as an impetus for change in his character.

Ben's 1st ep introduced & killed the actual Dharma Init., exposed Ben's lies, gave us crazy reveals about Richard and Jacob, and presented our best understanding of the Others yet. Best of all, we got Ben's theme, so creepy and melancholic.#BusOrigin
The music in LOST is fantastic. Much of that comes from a selection of themes that are altered slightly to bring across a different tone. Ben's theme might be the best example of this. Depending on the scene, and the way his theme is performed, it can bring melancholy, hope, fear, and so many other emotions, and it all stems from a rather simple melody.

Charlie's greatest hits had me on the verge of tears, which is impressive considering that it wasn't long ago that his character was very unlikable.
Is there a better way to tug at our heartstrings than to show us a character, who knows they are doomed, reflecting upon the most powerful and meaningful moments of his life?

The first part of perhaps the best season finale of the series.
Most of the action happens in the 2nd half, but we did get a nice little ending with Walt.
So, it can be hard to write about this episode, as it aired as the first half of a single night two-parter, making it, essentially, half an episode. Even so, in interviews, Lindelof (Damon Lindelof, Co-Showrunner of the series) has talked about how network TV staples, like commercial breaks and week to week schedules, shaped many of the qualities that made the show so great. In particular, the use of cliffhangers, not only at the end of an episode, but throughout each episode as well. This allows, what is essentially half of an extended episode, to end on something like a reverse stinger, with Walt appearing before Locke, giving him the motivation, and sheer need, to keep moving.

"Not Penny's Boat" already has an enduring legacy, which it fully deserves. Three words, with zero context, that will immediately make any LOST fan emotional.

This episode had a great fakeout
With 2 spots left in the Oceanic 6, Sun is revealed to be off island & heavily pregnant. We see Jin, off island, getting a stuffed Panda on his way to a Maternity Ward. We make assumptions, they aren't always right.
So very lost to craft a sweet tale in these flashbacks, and then jam a knife between our ribs at the end. My only issue, the surely unintentional, weird, and creepy tone Jorge Garcia took as his character, Hurley, visited and comforted Sun. "Good."

Not the biggest fan of the appendicitis storyline, but I did like the stuff with Sawyer's group. From Miles discovering Russo & Carl, to the near miss with the mercenaries, and lastly with Claire's (and Jack's) father showering up, holiday they baby.
Miles has a really cool ability, which works so well in a show like LOST, that has killed off so many characters, often without time for closure. I seem to recall him being a little underutilized though.
